Community garden plans take root

23 Dec 2015

With the completion of successful community garden workshops, the next exciting stage is underway for the Adelaide Park Lands opposite Bowden.

Bowden locals came together for three workshops to develop a plan for the community garden. Through a process that included brainstorming and discussion, the group laid down a shared vision for the garden. Aspects considered by the group included:

  • plants and infrastructure
  • how to allocate a limited budget
  • how to incorporate significant trees
  • previous site history
  • compliance with park lands legislation.

The workshops demonstrated that the most popular elements of the garden were plans for an espaliered fruit hedge, raised garden beds and compost bays. Sketches of the gardens were mapped out with the assistance of a planning consultant and reviewed in the final workshop.

The next step in the garden’s development will be the Adelaide City Council assessment of the plan and management arrangements, anticipated to take place in February 2016. Construction of the community garden can commence following approval by the Adelaide City Council.
