Not just another brick in the wall

24 Nov 2015

Locals living in and around our western suburbs are helping to improve the area whilst gaining valuable employment skills through Renewal SA’s Works Program in Bowden.

The course is run on a live training site, providing hands-on experience, including beautification of the Bowden area by constructing a brick and rendered panel fence.

Renewal SA Training and Employment Initiatives Manager Samantha Wilson says the aim is to give local people valuable skills and experience while beautifying Bowden.

“The Origin Wall Live Training Site Program is just one of our training and employment initiatives in Bowden which we started a few years ago to make sure communities and individuals benefit from our urban renewal activities,” Samantha said.

“The Works Program creates opportunities for local people and gives them skills to help them into the future.

“This can only be achieved in partnership with other organisations. In the case of the Origin Wall Live Training Site Program, that partnership is with TAFE SA and funded through the State Government’s WorkReady initiative.

“Not only do participants gain confidence and a great sense of achievement with something to show at the end of it, but they also help improve the area in which they live — so it’s very much a win-win scenario.”

Successful participants will achieve a Certificate II in Construction Pathways, gaining skills in the mortar trade area, including reading plans, set out and levelling, OH&S and learning how to work sustainably in the construction industry.

The Origin Wall Live Training Site program targets people living in Bowden, the City of Charles Sturt and wider western region and is a fully funded program. Participants gain a Certificate II in Construction Pathways (specialising in Brick Laying and Plastering) including tickets in White Card and Work Zone Traffic Management.
