Public Art for Bowden Main Park: Expression of Interest

12 Jun 2015

We are seeking expressions of Interest from artists to undertake a significant public art commission for Bowden’s Main Park.

The family of sculptural art pieces will be integrated within the park to enhance pedestrian experience and contribute to Bowden’s characteristic environment by intriguing the viewer to seek to understand the hidden meanings.

The theme for the art piece(s) is undercurrent, which imply hidden forces and energy that influence the atmosphere and vibe of the place.

Ways of interpreting this can include referencing the industrial past of the site or exploring the notion of the undercurrent in past or contemporary society.

Leading through the site from Fourth Street to the Third/Gibson Streets, the art commission will be conceived as two parts:

  • First within the central pedestrian paved area that may be made up of a number of elements that are of human-scale and encourage interaction.
  • The second part might be a larger-scale, more static sculptural work located on the corner of Third/Gibson Streets to act as a landmark and draw people to the park.

If you’re interested, it is highly recommended that you attend the afternoon briefing session on Wednesday, 17 June 2015.

Register your attendance by Monday, 15 June 2015 with Brecknock Consulting at [email protected].

A little about the Main Park

Located at the heart of Bowden, the Main Park will act as an activator for hospitality, retail and community uses mixed with residential living.

The intended character of Main Park will be semi-formal with a mixture of soft and hardscape surfaces. Its design will encompass formed grass areas, tree groves and shading, contemplative space, play space, public art, outdoor eating adjacent planned café uses in Plant 4 and connectivity between internal and external uses.

Bowden Main Park will become a major community open space for in Bowden as well as a focal point for the wider community. It will be a place for social gatherings, events, recreation, relaxation, contemplation, and play.

Oriented towards the Plant 4 factory building — to be repurposed as a community hub with retail outlets and other community facilities — the park features a large communal lawn, orchard-style planting, sensory gardens, a vine-covered arbour, sculptural water play, integrated play items and amenities such as seating, bike parking, picnic settings and BBQs.
