SA’s first certified organic market makes a move to Bowden

30 Sep 2014

South Australia’s first certified organic market will open at the State Government’s flagship Bowden development next month.

The award-winning market will be held every Saturday from 9am to 1pm, beginning 18th October, at Plant One with entry located in Fifth Street, just off Park Terrace, Bowden.

Bowden project director, Chris Menz said the Organic & Sustainable Market was a great opportunity to bring more people into Bowden and a perfect complement to the ambition to find exciting short-term uses that activate old structures awaiting redevelopment.

“We have recently celebrated our first residents calling Bowden home and it is great to be able to bring even more life and activity to the area,” Mr Menz said.

“The Organic & Sustainable Market has proven a drawcard at Henley Beach where it has developed a significant following. Many regulars have vowed to make the trip to Bowden on a Saturday morning. The new market will provide nearby residents as well as people from the city and western suburbs with the opportunity to shop locally and organically.

“In addition to proving an array of certified organic goods, the market will also provide a ‘big organic breakfast’ – perfect for those wanting a bite to eat while stocking up on organic produce.”

Market Manager, Simorne Banicevic said they hoped to attract an even bigger following thanks to Bowden’s location.

“We are really excited about bringing South Australia’s first certified organic market and many local organic producers to Bowden,” Ms Banicevic said.

“Bowden appealed to us because it’s developing into a vibrant, sustainable community on the city fringe, which fits well with our ethos. It’s also easily accessed from both the city and beach with good public transport including the tram and train.”

Ms Banicevic said the market would provide a one-stop shopping experience where customers can shop for all their certified organic produce, meat, honey, dry goods, wine, olive oil, ready-made foods and much more. It also has an array of eco-friendly, handmade, sustainable/fair trade gifts, personal care and household products. At the market, all foods/value-added food products sold (except fish and salt) are certified organic/biodynamic or made from certified organic/biodynamic ingredients.

“The market’s focus is on supporting local farmers, producers and businesses, providing affordable, quality produce and being an educational hub on all aspects of organics and quality food, sustainability and safety conscious products and services,” she said.

“The market is also a gathering place where neighbours can come together, share recipes, watch a cooking demonstration and learn about gardening and nutrition.”

The Organic & Sustainable Market is certified by NASAA Certified Organic (National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia). It won the City of Charles Sturt 2013 Civic Award for Sustainable Business of the Year.

New residents of the Bowden development will automatically receive free membership of the Organic & Sustainable Market, entitling them to 10 per cent off at all stalls and entry into a competition for a monthly members’ prize.

The Market will be located in a former industrial warehouse off Fifth Street across from the existing Jarmer’s Kitchen eatery and Bowden Information and Sales Centre.
