Christmas has come early for hundreds of Bowden residents and the surrounding community with the announcement of a free outdoor Cinema in the Park series in Bowden Park this summer.
Renewal SA, in partnership with Plant 4 Bowden, will present a summer of cinema, inviting families to enjoy the precinct’s central park while supporting local businesses.
The program kicks off this Friday, 5 December, at 5pm, with the early 2000s classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey.
Skye Bayne, Renewal SA Executive Director of Sales and Corporate Affairs, says the events are a great way to bring the community together.
“Instead of huddling on the couch this Friday, come enjoy a warm summer night in the park with your local community,” Ms Bayne says.
Three more outdoor cinema events will follow on Fridays 30 January, 27 February and 27 March, with titles to be chosen in the lead-up.
The series builds on the success of an event earlier this year that drew a capacity crowd for a screening of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
“The atmosphere at outdoor cinema events at Bowden is electric,” Ms Bayne says.
“All you need is a picnic rug or some deck chairs, grab a bite from one of Plant 4’s fantastic eateries, pick up some popcorn and enjoy a family-friendly night.”
Movies will be screened on a giant 7.5m inflatable cinema screen on the northern edge of Bowden Park, facing south towards Plant 4, set up by Adelaide Outdoor Cinema.
Jonathon Kaitatzis, owner of Plant 4, says the use of the park for such events encourages a sense of togetherness that is quite literally priceless.
“It offers families a free, fun night out that doesn’t stretch the budget, especially important at this time of year,” Mr Kaitatzis says.
He expects the first movie, given the time of year, will be particularly popular and set the festive tone while providing support for local businesses.
“Screenings like The Grinch create a warm, festive atmosphere in the precinct, and they make a noticeable difference for our Plant 3 and Plant 4 eateries and traders by boosting foot traffic and showcasing our vibrant local businesses,” he says.
“We’re thrilled to be part of an initiative that supports small business while spreading a bit of Christmas cheer.”
Bookings are not required to attend outdoor cinema events at Bowden.
Arrive from 7pm to settle in before the movie begins at sundown.
