A new place in Bowden

A new place in Bowden

28 May 2023

To stroll Bowden’s quiet streets in autumn is undoubtedly a delight, but it’s even more wonderful when you stumble across tiny hidden gems.

That’s what you’ll do if you’re taking a walk along Second Street. Nestled right underneath the Nightingale apartments is a new cafe, ‘A Place Coffee’.

Brought to us by Jo Nguyen, who spent seven years at Adelaide’s heavily revered Exchange Coffee in Vardon Avenue, A Place Coffee intends to showcase Australian coffee roasters from across the country, and some local legends. The house blend is from Market Lane in Melbourne, but a litany of guest roasters will appear across the weeks, so there will always be something new to sip on.

As for the eats, a small but mighty selection of pastries and treats arrive fresh each day from a random of local providers. Some, super local like our friends at Fold bakery on Port Road. If you step out the front and snuff hard enough, you can almost smell them baking.

The spot, as mentioned, is intimate with only a few tables indoors and a few more out, if weather permits. But this only adds to its charm, ensuring more conversations and connection between the community. On our first visit the team were constantly making small talk with residents and visitors, learning about their lives and why they’re in the area.

Sustainability is incredibly important to Jo and her husband Huy, which is why being part of the Nightingale building was such an important choice for their first independent location. The building meets our 6 Star Green Star standards, but seeing these standards ensure A Place Coffee is powered by GreenPower and the building utilising recycled rainwater means even the smallest actions are just that little bit more environmentally friendly.

Though only having been open a short while, A Place Coffee already has a cult following. The team don’t intend to make too many drastic changes to the menu but are very keen to engage with thh Bowden community through great coffee and small events. They recently ran a coffee cupping night which was so popular, some guest booked without even knowing what cupping is!

It’s safe to say that A Place Coffee is going to become a real Bowden must visit. Make sure you go introduce yourself to this wonderful, friendly team.
